The North West - The Place for Sport in the UK

Seeing the start of the Premier League football season at the weekend made me think how lucky sports fans are who live in the North West of England.

Not only do we have four of the top teams in the country (Liverpool, European Champions, Manchester City English Champions, Manchester United and Everton) but there are a host of football league teams in the region from Carlisle, Blackpool and Preston to Wigan, Bolton, Blackburn and Burnley and on to Salford, Tranmere and Chester City.

It is not just football; the North West is the home of Rugby League and home to teams such as Wigan, St. Helens and Warrington as well as Sale from the Rugby Union Premiership.

Manchester is the home of Lancashire County Cricket Club who are based at Old Trafford which regularly hosts international cricket tests and one day matches. The velodrome in Manchester is a major site for cycling and has contributed significantly to Team GB’s cycling success at recent Olympic Games.

Liverpool hosts an international show jumping event each New Year and a major tennis tournament in the run up to Wimbledon fortnight. The city recently hosted the Women’s Netball World Cup. Haydock Park hosts championship horse racing over the jumps and on the flat and, of course, Aintree in Liverpool is the home of the world famous Grand National.

The North West coast is world famous for its golf links with the Open frequently held at Hoylake, Birkdale and Lytham and there are many more championship level courses such as West Lancs and Hillside in the area.
